The Evolution of Advertising
As time goes on, society continues to evolve, and advertising evolves with it. Over time, especially in the last 50 years, the world of advertising has changed immensely. Looking at what advertisements used to be, compared to what they are now it is very easy to see the differences. There are many reasons as to why it has changed so drastically over the years. Some of the reasons that advertising has evolved over time is technology, society, and products.
Looking at advertisements 50 years ago, the 1960’s, it is easy to see that they did not try to sell products the way that we do today. One major difference is that most of their advertising was done through magazines. Since technology was not as present in people’s everyday lives back then as it is now, they did not have the ads before YouTube videos or right before you reached the next level of Candy Crush. Instead, while people got their daily magazine they also got their daily dose of advertisements. Ads took up entire pages in magazines much like they do today, only they looked very different. Some of the major differences include the color choices. If you look at the image on the left, you can see that the color choices are not as bold as the image on the right. Another difference is the way that the product is being displayed. In both ads the “Whopper” is being sold, but in the older advertisement there is nothing interesting looking about the product that will draw attention of the reader. Looking at the newer advertisement the product is in the very front and pictured in high quality. The light ring around the product makes it appear almost heavenly. The final difference is the words that are written on each of the ads. In the newer ad there is important information included. By saying “100% Beef” in bold letters, the customer will read that as something that they want and find the product more desirable. While the older advertisement says “A Meal in Itself”, information that a customer might not find as valuable, which would not add to the product's desirability.
As technology becomes more advanced the advertising world is able to increase the quality of their work. They are able to turn out the type of images and graphics that people enjoy looking at. People have become accustomed to the fancy advertisements we have today, ones that entertain while selling a product, compared to ads 50 years ago that were used simply to sell a product. As you can see in this old pepsi advertisement there are no gimmicks or any creative aspects to the ad. It presents all the information relevant to sell the products, while still not doing the type of marketing we are used to seeing today. Today, ads have so much more to them as opposed to fifty years ago. The advancements in programs such as photoshop, illustrator as well as many others, allow for people to create ads that are more of an experience for the public. Advancements in other technology as well, including cameras, lighting, computers, etc., have paved the way for more developed ads. As opposed to marketing only through paper ads, people are able to advertise in many different forms. Television commercials, billboards, radio commercials are some forms of advertisement that are constantly on air. Now, more often than not, the general population is hearing or seeing advertisements.
While advertisements are something that cost lots of money to create, they should be able to generate the revenue as the products they are advertising are being sold in large sums due to the high quality of the advertisements. As the quality of advertisements increases, it becomes easier to make the products being sold appear more attractive to the general public. This can cause more and more people to invest in the products that they see in ads everyday. As money goes back into these companies the more money that they will have to make continuously impressive advertisements. It creates a cycle where the impressive advertisements cause more people to invest in products giving more money to the advertising companies allowing them to make even more impressive advertisements.
In conclusion, in the last fifty years advertisements has changed greatly. It has changed from being straightforward black and white paper ads to something that is some form of an art; including tv commercials, radio ads, magazine ads, and computer popups. These changes are mostly due to the progression in technology. As technology keeps progressing the world of advertising can do the same. Overall, today more attention and effort is being put into the world of advertising causing such incredible improvements amongst advertisements everywhere.

Knotted
Sometimes I don’t brush my hair for a couple days.
I keep it up in a bun.
A tight bun.
A really tight bun.
If I brush it it get’s poofy and I can’t have poofy hair.
That’s worse than the bun.
The tight bun.

My First Kitchen
The white tile was cold under my bare feet. I hopped over to the square wooden table that we somehow managed to squeeze in the kitchen. My legs dangled in the air, for it seemed that no matter how much I grew my feet would never touch the floor. Trivets were set out atop the table awaiting the steaming hot pots and pans about to be placed on top of them. A pile of white plastic plates ,that my mother had most definitely bought somewhere for a penny, sat in the middle of the table. A collection of mismatched silverware on top of those. I felt something cold at my ankles and looked down to see the gallon of milk we were forced to put on the floor since there was no room on the table. Above the table hung a light. This light was colored class and on the sides were images of assorted fruits. Grapes, pears, and apples all embellished the light that I had seen everyday for my entire life. It was chained up right next to the stain on the ceiling from when a bottle of salad dressing had exploded on my mom. The light made bright the small area we had been threatening to make bigger for years. My adult brother and sister sat squished in their chairs with their backs against the wall. While I, the kid sister, sat comfortably at the head of the table.
As soon the food hit the table we all wanted to start our meal, but my mother insisted we say grace. None of us, beside her, were terribly religious but we all held hands and waited patiently for her to say her mantra because it made her happy. Dinner time consisted of everyone telling about their day and everyone making jokes and laughing constantly.
Afterwards my brother ran off to the bathroom to avoid doing dishes while my sister and I cleaned the kitchen. As we cleaned I did everything in my power to stay away from the sink. I always liked to stick to easy things such as: put the leftovers away or wipe down the table. As we cleaned we focused on making each other laugh, and I could only imagine the smiles on my parents faces when they heard that laughter from the other room. We tried to stay focused with the goal of finishing the kitchen and being able to go join the family on the comfy blue couch in the living room.

The Galleria
Nothing. My hands were stuck out in the air trying to feel around for something, but I felt nothing. I cautiously maneuvered around the room in hopes to put my hands on something before something put its hands on me. Finally, I laid my palms on the flat surface of a wall. I ran my hands around quickly trying to find a light switch. I had never seen so much darkness. It was darkness that was different than any darkness I had ever seen. It was darkness that was thick. Darkness that filled my lungs and sat on my skin. Darkness so dark that I felt no amount of light would be able to slice through the black orb that surrounded me. Under my fingertips I felt a switch. I flipped it and my throat close up and tears form in my eyes as nothing happened. I flipped it again and again with hopes that one of these times would prove effective. When nothing happened I turned and pressed my back against the wall and shrunk down to sit on the floor. The darkness felt like it was getting closer and closer to me. It pushed on my body like it was trying to condense me. I sat on the floor with my eyes wide and hot tears slowly running down my cheeks. In the distance I saw a small red light. It moved across the same floor I sat on. The red light got bigger as it got closer to me until I could eventually pick it up. I held the small object close to my face and stared intently at it. The small red light at the front of it shone ever so slightly, but it allowed for me to see what I was holding. A small wind up robot sat in my palms and I looked at it with confusion. Someone had to have wound up the toy in order for it to have walked over to me, and as I sat in the darkness I wondered who had done the winding. I looked away from the robot. My stomach dropped when I saw what could have only been hundreds of little red lights marching closer to me. An army of little toy robots approached me and I tried to get as far away from them as I could ,but with my back already facing the wall, there was no where I could go. I kicked away the robots as they got near my feet. The red lights flew away but then immediately came back. The robots crawled on my legs and up onto my arms. They walked fast and powerful like someone had wound them up for hours on ends. The cold metal touched my skin as they climbed me. I flailed and tried to keep them away but it way no use. They pulled me down until I was laying flat on the floor. Their flat feet pressed down on my face and my neck and I felt like I was drowning in them. I summoned all my strength to lift my arms up but they had become like a sheet of cement that pushed me down into the floor. My chest heaved and I gasped for air until finally they covered my nose and mouth.

I had never been so scared of my reflection. Sure I looked in the mirror all the time but standing in a room where that's all I see. Mirrors lined the walls and everywhere I looked I was there, looking back at myself. I turned and turned hoping that one of the times I turned I wouldn't be there. The mirrors went from the floor all the way to the ceiling, where a blinding light shone down on me. I sat down on the floor with my legs pulled into my chest and I looked into my own eyes. I stared and I stared since there was apparently no other option for me. The room felt so incredible small. It seemed that if I sat there any longer the mirrors would start to grab onto me and never let go. My eyes burned and turned red from staring so long. My eyes darted to look at the reflection over my left shoulder. Something moved. I turned quickly to see what it was that was perched behind my back. When I turned there was nothing there but myself looking. Looking and judging myself because of how crazy I looked. My knees dragged across the tough carpet as I moved closer to one of the mirrors. My face moved in closer and closer. My eyes were daggers staring into my own soul. The look had been the same for so long. It was the same until I saw a small bump on my right cheek. I watched with my eyes wide as the bump moved across my face. I quickly got to my feet and looked even closer. The bump sat still right outside the corner of my eye. The mirrors began to fog because my hot breath was directly on it for so long. My body did not move an inch. The bump then began to move incredibly fast across my eye. I let out a screech as a big cockroach looked back at me from the comfort of my eyeball. I scratched my face and rubbed my eyes as hard as I could. I kept scratching and scratching and scratching. I was gonna get this bug.

Dammit.Dammit dammit dammit. The only thing I could think when I first opened my eyes was dammit. I looked all around me and nothing was there except for the knocked over shelves that me and my friends had been leaning on hours before. I promised them I could keep them safe. They were here. It was fun. It was my idea to stay here. It was my idea to hide in the mall and wait until after hours and then sneak out and have our fun. Everything was fine. It was fun. Then the lights went out. It was so dark I couldn't believe how dark it was. They screamed and things crashed and then I took a blow to the head and now here I am but theyŕe not. I stood up and ran out of the room I had been knocked out in for hours. I looked all around but there was no sign of anyone anywhere. All the gates on the stores were closed and showed no sign of being forcibly opened. I stood completely still in the middle of the mall without any idea as to where begin my search. My head turned quickly when I heard a screech. I started running. I ran all the way to the escalator and began to run up it. As I took big steps up the black stairs my foot wouldn't move. I turned and looked only to see that the escalator stairs had opened up and seemingly taken my foot captive. I tried to pull my foot away but that was doing the opposite of what I wanted. Soon enough my entire leg had disappeared into the stairs. I tried my best to claw my way out but nothing was happening. Both my legs, my waist, my torso had been consumed. I grabbed onto the edge for as long as could until finally my hands just slipped.

For this piece I used Photoshop to create an interesting background for the image. I painted circles in many different colors and then went in with the smudge tool to create the tie dye effect. I cropped the background out of the original picture and added the tie dye in publisher. Then, also in publisher, I added the arrows and the text on top of the image.
While working on this piece I learned when and why to switch back and forth between publisher and Photoshop. I also learned how to create my own design through the program.
