After visiting Thayer Street, I used the photos that I took to construct an attractive and informative brochure. To create my brochure I started with a blank sheet of paper. I then proceeded to create an interesting template for the paper. I changed the background to a light blue color and created a pattern using darker blue shapes added to the bottom and side of each panel. I added pictures of different restaurants I visited to each panel, where I would later add text describing what the businesses were. For the title on each page, I first typed it up in word art, then I saved the word art as an image where from there I would insert it into Photoshop. In Photoshop I added a white accent to the inside of the dark blue words. After adding this accent to it, I then put the words through the poster edges filter to give it more a graphic look. I then added the text back into the brochure. The descriptions were then added to each page to give more information on each business.
While doing this project I learned more skills on Photoshop. I practiced more with moe interesting methods as well as methods that made the process easier. I believe that this field trip and assignment was beneficial. For me specifically this project was beneficial because I one day hope to own and operate my own business. This field trip and assignment gave me the opportunity to see both successful and unsuccessful methods of advertisement as well as how to inform the general public of a business and what it stands for.

This greeting card was created by using Microsoft publisher. I started with a blank document and from there created a template of my own. By inserting a triangle shape I created my own border to add something interesting to the card. I decided on creating an anniversary card. For the cover I chose a font that I found to be elegant and formal. I put the design under the words to once again create an elegant and formal look to the card. I carried the triangle border I created to the inside of the card where I also put the message and the photo of the celebrities. The photo of the celebrities was edited in Photoshop. The first edit I made to the photo included filling the background in entirely black. I then outlined the celebrities in a neon blue and again in white. After that I added paint to the background to create a bubble-like design. Then, I applied the filter "glowing edges" to the image. This quite literally made the edges glow. The blue and white that I outlined in glowed and gave a very interesting look to the picture. The bubble design that I added to the background also glowed which created a background that was unique and interesting. The final edit I made to the image was taking all prior treatments off the faces of the celebrities to ensure that they were recognizable. This created a look that all of these treatments were slowly consuming the people but hadn't reached their faces yet. On the back cover I kept it very simple by only including the same border that has been presented in the rest of the card.
I created this brochure using Microsoft publisher. After starting with a blank document I made my own theme. Using shapes I created the design at the top and I maintained a consistent color theme throughout the entire brochure to create this theme. To keep the brochure consistent and to make it realistic I kept to using strictly real life images over clip art or cartoons. I used a variety of fonts, making sure that each one was fitting to what the text was saying. I used Photoshop to alter my self portrait into something looking more like a painting rather than a photograph. I added thorough descriptions of myself and my qualifications and of the business itself. I made sure that all images were relevant to the business and that they were interesting to look at. I used word art on publisher to create my own logo which I placed on the back cover of the document. I learned how to alter images using Photoshop and how to properly use an automatic paper folder. Using all of these methods I believe that I created a realistic brochure that was effective in adverting the business I created.
The first flyer was created from a template. I began with the template and inserted accurate information in the spaces provided. The second flyer I created from a blank document. This flyer is advertising for a haunted house. I made sure that the image of the haunted house was prominent in the ad, as to draw the most attention to it. The background I chose is a gradient of orange and black. I chose this because I believed that it pertained to Halloween. I chose the font chiller because it looked creepy and once again pertained to Halloween. The third flyer was also made from a blank document. It was made to advertise the same information as the second but in a different manner. This flyer was made entirely in black and white. Remodeling it in black and white made it necessary for me to make changes to the design. For example, I had to change the color and size of some of the font. I also made the scenes presented in the ads similar but also very different. In the second flyer the pictured house simply sat on the background. In the third flyer I added a more dynamic background consisting of mountains and a road which made for more dimension and made it much more interesting to look at.
The advertisement that I created is making an attempt to sell the customer emeralds. The emeralds lay on a bed of green accents. The color compliments the gems without making the page too green. A balance of action is present in this design. On the bottom left corner all colors, patterns and textures are concentrated. The farther you move away from the corner the less the concentration until it turns completely white. By concentrating everything in one corner and leaving the opposite nearly bare, the readers eye is drawn to the product that is being sold while leaving a balance on the page. In the center of the less concentrated area is where the marketing takes place. By having the sentence "The perfect gift for someone you love." be there it makes the product more appealing to the reader because now it connects to them personally. The elements of design that are present in this advertisement are color and line. Putting the vivid green up against the white background makes it stand out drastically. Line was also used by setting up the emeralds in a line that contradicted the many skew lines of the green behind it. This drew attention to the emeralds. The principle of design used was emphasis. Emphasis was on the emeralds. They stood out very well by being placed on the white background.
I learned how to properly apply both the elements and principles of design to an creating an advertisement. I learned how to use line to draw attention to what needed attention and I also learned what it took to make an advertisement appealing and effective.
